Meditation Monday: Christian Beware

Meditation Monday is where I share my thoughts and reflections from the sermons at my home church, Watson Chapel Baptist Church, Pastor Todd Howard.

Tonight is the College Football Championship game. The Oregon Ducks (Go Ducks) will battle Ohio State for the claim of champions and lay hold of the prized trophy. The coaches in this game will develop plans and schemes to try and out smart and catch each other off their game. The Christian is in a spiritual battle with Satan and in a very real way Satan develops plans and schemes to catch you off your game too.

This Sunday we were in 2 Corinthians 11: 7-20 for our morning service and Genesis 9: 1-6 for the evening service. As I was going over my notes and thinking about these sermons I kept thinking how Satan plans, schemes and twist the Word to scheme against the Body of Christ and believers. In our morning service Pastor Todd pointed out marks of false leaders, as described by Paul, concerning those who opposed Paul in Corinth.

These men were false apostles who lacked financial nobility. They were picking up offerings and were telling the Corinthians Paul didn’t love them, that’s why he isn’t picking up an offering from you. These men also lacked integrity and were disguised as sheep but were really wolves. Paul doesn’t hold nothing back when describing these men,

For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. (11:13-15ESV)

Finally, these false apostles didn’t love the body of Christ. These men were about me, myself and I. They loved self.

Sometimes these false apostles and false teachers are so slick and smooth they lead some astray. This is even true in our day and this shouldn’t shock us because they are marks of Satan, who disguises himself as an angel of light, deceiving all he can.

Which leads me to our evening service. We covered the 4 commands God gave Noah after the flood.

The Blessing of Family- Be fruitful and multiply
The Blessing of Food- Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you.
The Warning About Blood- you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
The Warning About Murder- life for life

I remember as a teenager at a Josh McDowell event he said “God issues a command for two reasons, to provide for you and to protect you.” We can list many ways these 4 commands provide and protect us, which Pastor Todd did.

But as I was thinking and meditating on these sermons today, I couldn’t help but think of the many ways these 4 commands have been twisted by Satan and false teachers.

God’s idea of the family unit is attacked in many ways. Attacked by disregarding marriage by shacking up or by divorce on demand. Attacked by gay marriage and abortion. We can go on and on. In our world today there are some animals that have more rights than human life. There are meals out there that have blood as a part of them. There are cultic practices which involve drinking blood. Vampires are admired by some in our society. Capital punishment is debated in our society and even looked down upon.

Why do I point all this out? Satan and this world system are always trying to twist, scheme and plan against God and His Word, to deceive those in and outside the church. Satan is disguising himself as an angel of light to deceive and lead people in rebellion against God and His Word.

The Christian must always be on guard.

Until next week

Solo Deo Gloria
