The Gospel by Ray C. Ortlund Jr.  Crossway Books 2014. Pages144. Hardback Kindle

Gospel doctrine creates a gospel culture. The doctrine of grace creates a culture grace.

What is the Gospel and why does it matter? Ray Ortlund provides much needed answers to these questions for our generation. He points out,

Every generation must pick up their Bibles and rediscover the gospel afresh for themselves and rearticulate the ancient message in their own words for their own times. We are in just such a time of active gospel rediscovery, and it is exciting to be involved.

Ortlund writes in ripple effect fashion starting out displaying how the Gospel effects the individual, the Church and the world. Also prioritizing the importance of the Church to display the beauty of Christ in their churches through Gospel doctrine and Gospel culture. Ortlund displays this importance in a simple math equation,

Gospel doctrine – gospel culture = hypocrisy
Gospel culture – gospel doctrine = fragility
Gospel doctrine + gospel culture = power

After laying the foundation for the importance of the Church to display Gospel doctrine and Gospel culture, Ortlund issues us a challenge, go into the world with Gospel power, Gospel courage and Gospel love to display the beauty of Christ through the Church. The Gospel is the hope for the world and the Church is His chosen vehicle to spread His message. So throw off all self interest for Gospel interest and unity.

Ray Ortlund provides a treasure in The Gospel for the Church today. Bringing the Church’s focus back to a clear and concise message with an exciting mission, spreading the Gospel. You dont want to pass up this book.

Until next time
